I originally intended to post this last week, but Thing 2 cracked his head open on the corner of a table about 15 minutes before we were supposed to leave for a weekend in NYC for Thing 1’s 10th bday … and, well, you know. Parenthood and common sense trump weekly blogging!
Anywho! I’ve been excited to share this news with you for months!
Cottages & Bungalows Magazine is teaming up with its sister publication American Farmhouse Style to build a project house with the post & beam design/build extraordinaire Yankee Barn Homes to create a project house … right here in New Hampshire!
And Home Glow Design has been asked to design the Great Room!!!
Emil Hanslin founded Yankee Barn Homes in 1969 to custom-design and craft timber frame homes in an authentic barn style, designing them to fit a contemporary lifestyle and crafting them with the finest materials for weather protection and energy conservation.

They definitely fit in with our New Hampshire north woods, outdoorsy aesthetic!
YBH has named the project the “Springfield Barn Home.” It’s roughly 2,500 square feet and located in the Eastman community in Grantham, NH, a golf, x-country, and other all-things-New-Hampshire recreational community about 45 minutes north of Concord.
The HH and I were already familiar with the area, as Eastman maintains a number of miles of groomed x-country ski trails we like to use during the winter. It’s a wonderful area!
Cottages & Bungalows and American Farmhouse Style, on the other hand, tend toward a more simple and vintage-y style, as their titles make clear.
I was thrilled when C&B called me up and asked me to design the great room, but I have to admit, I was a little daunted by designing for clients like C&B and Yankee Barn Homes — and being tasked with marrying the two styles while still putting my own fresh/classic spin on things.
I became acquainted with New Hampshire/Vermont/Cape Cod artist Peter Batchelder when I wrote this post about his work a number of months ago.
After seeing this painting, titled “East Hill,” via his Instagram feed, I knew I had my inspiration launchpad!
To me, it offered the perfect combination of luminous color and northern New England barn life rusticity.
And, luckily, Peter was happy to loan the painting for the duration of the Project House!
Blue & purple, stripes, herringbone, and a whole lotta plaid!
Some very awesome sponsors have come on board to make my vision a reality (some, I’ll bet, that are totally new to you!), and I look forward to sharing my selections with you.
Cottages & Bungalows will be sharing different aspects of the home in each new issue. The Great Room will be featured in the following issues:
- December 2019/January 2020 COTTAGE CHRISTMAS: Project House 2019: The living room reveal! See how the heart of the home has come together for the holidays.
- February/March 2020 PLAN YOUR DREAM COTTAGE Project House 2019: The reveal! Tour the completed build and see how all the design and architecture came together.
And during the summer, Yankee Barn Homes will be opening the Project House for tours.
More updates to follow! See you next Saturday!
