Yes, you heard correctly. 😉

As I’ve said in the past, while I really do advise branching out beyond catalogs, especially for American-made upholstery & other decor to get the best quality & a unique character (and especially for those things that are going to get the most wear & tear), I have NO PROBLEM with mixing those items up with some great retail finds. You can’t beat the ease of ordering and the “return-ability” Big Box affords.

3 Ways to “Stretch” Your Decorating Budget & Fill the Room!

And if you love the look of some of today’s young designers but don’t want to fork over the $$$ for their more custom items, Big Box has a great way of giving you the look.  Things like accent tables,  lighting, and decor — go for it!

For example, Studio McGee, Amber Lewis, and Christiane Lemieux all have stylish collections. But today’s NEW collection really has me smiling because it’s by a designer/artist/textile designer that I actually specify for my clients!

So, where can you find this new collection?????

But first, a little Public Service Announcement!

Now! Back to today’s topic!

Rebecca Atwood — Artist & Surface Designer

First of all, what is surface design? Well, if you go on Spoonflower, all those peeps are “surface designers.”

Surface design is any type of artwork (pattern, illustration, hand lettering, etc.) made by a designer that is intended to be applied to a surface to enhance its visual appearance and/or functionality. In the world of interior design, this mostly pertains to textiles, wall coverings, and soft goods made from those textiles (table linens, bedding, etc.).

Though the majority of the fabrics I use in design hail from larger fabric vendors, I love to incorporate small-house surface design companies when I really want to add a bit of quirk and unique character to a home. (For example — check out the bespoke wallpaper in this bathroom!)

In the 5 years that I’ve been in design professionally, I’ve seen the numbers of boutique surface designers that cater to interior designers EXPLODE. Rebecca Atwood was one of the earlier designers that came to my attention. Born from her childhood summers in Cape Cod, her patterns are created in watercolors & inspired by nature.

She tends toward a subtle but surprising use of muted, *slightly* greyed colors. But NOT just gray and blue. (Yes!!!)

Rebecca encourages pattern-on-pattern, and yet the result is serene & fluid nevertheless.

Rebecca has burgeoned her business in the last 5 years by offering fabric & wallpaper by the yard, ready-made pillows, and 2 wonderful design books.

If you’re a rabid design fan, you may remember this bed that Emily Henderson custom designed for her short-lived master bedroom way back in 2016. That was, like, 3 houses ago for her.

Ok, I was NOT a fan of this bed, nor this room. However, there were individual elements I liked — this fabric, the nightstands, the end-of-bed bench. However, the overall effect IMO — random. But that’s just me.

Heck, her millions of bucks and adoring fans (of which I am one, truly!) don’t care about my opinion!

Below is the same fabric used to much better effect (again, in my opinion) in a room by Meredith Ellis, a favorite designer of mine.

I won’t kid you. Rebecca’s hand-printed fabrics, wallpapers, & pillows do not come cheaply. That’s where the beauty of retail enters. Rebecca has made some new designs for Pottery Barn and created a line of linens, removable wallpaper, and tableware — all in her painterly patterns that will bring a smile to your face.

And with the yellow daffodils FINALLY coming up here in New Hampshire, I’m ready for Rebecca’s spring-time hues!

I love the wallpaper designs — especially in a kids’ room or laundry room, where you really need a little cheer! I’ve been collecting mugs again, lately. I think that “calm” one has my name on it.

Is it too ironic to drink my afternoon double espresso in a cup that says, “calm????”

Any pieces strike YOUR fancy?
